Woonallee smashed records in heifer sale
Prior to their successful 4th annual Woonallee Elite Simmental production sale last Thursday, the Baker family offered their annual draft of 198 commercial composite heifers on the Auctions Plus network.
In an extraordinary sale result, these were snapped up in a matter of minutes in frantic bidding by interstate buyers who have come to appreciate their outstanding quality and productive capacity. In the process they set what is believed to be an Australian record price for such young unmated heifers. Aged 10-11 months and weighing from 296 to 357kg liveweight, they sold to $1,000/head and averaged a fantastic $871.82.
The top priced draft of 56 Angus/Simmental heifers weighed 327kg liveweight, this price equating to $3.06/kg. The successful bidder was Kelvin Fitzgerald, Elders Mildura operating on behalf of local Mildura client Mark Collett, trading as RM Collett & Sons.
He had secured the previous lot of 20 heifers of the same breeding and weighing 357kg or 975/head, or $2.73/kg. Underbidder on the top heifers was Aaron Malseed, Elders Warrnambool. These 76 Angus x Simmental heifers averaged $993.42/head.
Ray White Molong agent, Ben Redfern, bidding on behalf of Peter Morley (who later bought 2 bulls in the Woonallee Simmental Elite Production sale for $7,000 & $5,000) was the successful bidder on the 97 Simmental x Poll Hereford red heifers. Offered in 2 lines of 22 and 75 head, they were purchased for $835 & $800/head respectively. With average weights of 329 & 296kg liveweight, this equated to $2.54 & $2.70/kg.
The sale grossed $172,620 in an amazing result for high quality heifers, indicating the restocking buying pressure is really starting to be felt in the market place.
